The Sun Carnival City Challenge at Ebotse Golf and Country Estate teed off on Wednesday 21 September and Mark Williams was amongst those at the top of the leaderboard after the morning field had found their way around the links layout.
The R700, 000 event saw Mark Williams – who has missed three cuts this season and has two top-10 finishes in his last five tournaments – put behind an indifferent season with a tied four-under-par 68 round with Chris Swanepoel on the first day.
The Zimbabwean seems to have been buoyed by the sixth place finish he accomplished at Sishen because he displayed tenacity and class during the first round at Ebotse.
“I’ve been struggling a little bit with my opening rounds. So it’s nice to get off with a good start. I feel I have been doing nicely in the last two rounds, so hopefully I’ll get closer to the leading pack,” said Williams.
The 32 year old who plays out of Pecanwood Golf Estate was not happy with the three bogeys he made on the third, the eighth and 14th holes but is determined not to let that affect his near-perfect start to the Challenge. “I made three silly bogeys with wedges in my hand; a little disappointed by that but I am happy with the score at the end of the day,”
The condition of the course, however, offered the Zimbabwean some consolation as he teed off to a brilliant start. “The greens here are great. The course in great condition,’ he said.
