Titch Moore is one of the few Sunshine Tour golfers based in Port Elizabeth and he’ll receive a hero’s welcome when he tees up at Vodacom Origins of Golf presented by Samsung at St. Francis Links this week.
Moore plays out of the 6661-metre links course, which is 100 kilometres away from his house, and last year the crowds got behind him during a playoff with JJ Senekal, who won after two extra holes.
The local support will be greater this year, because Moore won the Telkom Business PGA Championship in April and currently ranks 16th on the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit.
Two months ago fellow East coaster Wallie Coetsee won for the first time in 17 years at the Mopani Copper Mines Zambia Open. He hails from Jeffrey’s Bay and will surely have the locals excited.
Also making the trip from Port Elizabeth is Lyle Rowe, who picked up his maiden victory at the Zambia Sugar Open one month ago.
The three recent Sunshine Tour winners will all bring extra support to St. Francis this week, where the wind will surely blow. For Moore it’s all about managing the links well, because he’ll have first place in his sights from the first round on Wednesday.
