On Thursday, just six-and-a-half miles from The Home of Golf, Branden Grace obliterated Kingsbarns Golf Links, where he shot 12-under-par 60 and set the new course record on the 209-year-old track.
ItÂs difficult to grasp a round which contains an eagle and 10 birdies, but such was the case for GraceÂs first round of The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Moreover, he closed out the round with five consecutive red numbers, soaring clear of the field.
He began on the back and put quick birdies on the card at 10, 12 and 13. An eagle at 16 anchored down a superb nine, but none could have expected what was to follow on his second loop.
Birdies at one and three were followed by pars at two and four, as Grace continued to look impressive. No one thought it was possible to shift up another gear, but Grace did. Five straight birdies, which started at the fifth and ended next to the clubhouse, marked the 23-year-old as the new holder of Kingsbarns lowest-ever round.
ItÂs the lowest score ever recorded during The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, let alone falling just one stroke shy of the Âmagic numberÂ. The days when this youngster was taken lightly are little more than a distant memory.
