Bremner rises high with BMG win

Merrick Bremner’s emphatic win at the BMG Classic this weekend counted for plenty of points in the Chase to the Investec Cup – 150 to be exact – and they’ve taken the 28-year-old to 11th in the standings.

The Chase to the 2015 Investec Cup began at this year’s Telkom Business PGA Championship and incorporates every Sunshine Tour event until the week preceding the Investec Cup tournament next March. The top 30 points earners will gain a place at the prestigious Investec Cup tournament.

Having the Investec logo emblazoned on his golf shirts adds some extra pressure when it comes to qualifying for the limited-field tournament and Bremner is firmly focused on making it through to March.

“It's important for me to get points, especially as an Investec-sponsored player. I needed that boost, because it's a big deal for me to make the Investec Cup and to compete for the big prize,” he said.

That big prize is the bonus pool and this year Trevor Fisher Jnr netted a tasty R3,5-million for his overall points victory. That moment opened the eyes of many Sunshine Tour professionals, who suddenly became aware of just how lucrative the tournament really is.

But to get there it takes more than one good result and bigger events offer up more points. Bremner picked up 170 points for a top-10 finish at the Telkom Business PGA Championship and has amassed a total of 524 through the 2014 season.

Winning the BMG Classic this week has given the Pretoria local a real chance at making the Investec Cup, but he’ll need to keep the results coming over the big events of the summer.
