Charl headlines Investec Cup field

SA Open Championship: Round 3Top-ranked South African and 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel is a hot favourite going into the week of the Investec Cup, where the 30-year-old will look to spark his season with a victory.

The world number 33 heads up a field that includes George Coetzee, Morten Orum Madsen and Darren Fichardt and all 30 players that tee up this week will be eyeing the Bonus Prize Pool.

Since the Telkom Business PGA Championship last year players on the Sunshine Tour have been accruing points in the Chase to the Investec Cup. Last week’s Tshwane Open marked the end of the chase, with the top 30 in points standings making it through to the season finale, which plays out at Millvale Private Retreat and Lost City Golf Course.

Schwartzel heads to the R1-million tournament looking to rekindle his game after finishing tied for 44th at the WGC Cadillac Championship a fortnight ago. Earlier this year the Vereeniging local finished second at the South African Open Championship and ninth at the HSBC Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.

The last few tournaments have been tough for the nine-time European Tour winner, who tied for 41st at the Northern Trust Open and missed the cut at the Honda Classic.

A return to home soil will do wonders for his confidence and this week could mark the turnaround point for Schwartzel. One thing is for certain: there are four tantalizing rounds of competition lying ahead at the Investec Cup.
