Derik determined to do well at Africa Open

Derik Ferreira led the qualifying round for the Africa Open and then shot 69 during round one. He’s determined to use lucrative events like the Africa Open to achieve his goals for 2013.

“Once you get into the tournament you relax, because you know you’ve got a couple of rounds to get yourself into position. The pre-qualifiers are tough, so you try to carry that form into the main tournament and give your best.

“My goal for this year is to play well in the summer and fight to get into the top 30 or 40 on the Order of Merit this year. These events are crucial for that,” he said.

The 23-year-old started with a drop, but managed to fight his way back with five birdies over the first 18 at East London Golf Club. For younger players on tour it’s not just about scoring well, because it’s hard to keep a cool head when there’s a million Euros on the line.

”I’m in a good frame of mind and I’m hitting the ball nicely and putting nicely. The game is definitely there, so I need to go out there and just have some fun and make things happen,” he said.

When the Els Club professional reached the clubhouse there was still a round to play before the cut to 65 and ties, but he was determined to put in another good show on Friday.
