Tyrone van Aswegen ranks 137th in the FedExCup standings, 12 places shy of making it to the playoffs. With the elite headed for WGC-Bridgestone Invitational this week there is a great chance for the South African to make some points and secure a spot at the PGA Tour’s season finale.
The first event of the four-tournament playoffs is The Barclays, which pits the leading 125 FedExCup points earners against one another. The field size is reduced for each tournament and the next playoff, the Deutsche Bank Championship will have 100 players, the BMW Championship 70 and the Tour Championship a mere 30.
This week’s Barracuda Championship offers up 300 points to the winner, but Van Aswegen’s goal will be to move ahead of 125th-placed Charlie Belgian, who has 403 points to his name.
The South African stands a mere 48 points behind 25th place and his latest result have been good enough to make him a contender this week. In June he tied for 21th at the Quicken Loans National and 26th at the Travelers Championship.
While he’s made 14 cuts in 23 starts this year, the focus will be on cracking the top-10 for the first time this season. His four top-25s this season indicate that he’s coming close enough, but that extra push is needed if he wants to make the FedExCup playoffs, which comes with a guaranteed PGA Tour card for the 2015 season.
This week in North Virginia is prime time for Van Aswegen, who has to make his move soon.
