Gerber stays calm and birdies 18th for win at Maccauvlei

Divan Gerber birdied the 18th hole to finish six-under-par and win on Friday at the R100,000 Maccauvlei event on the Sunshine Big Easy Tour presented by Stonehage.

Gerber made a 20-foot putt on the final hole for a tournament total of 138, one shot clear of Ockie Strydom, Louis Calitz and Lyle Rowe who shared second.

The Bethlehem Country Club professional started confidently on day two with birdies on the first and second, and moved into the lead. “I started off great today,” said Gerber.

He took a three-putt on the fifth and Gerber dropped his first shot before carding a further two birdies on the sixth and seventh.

He found the bunker on the ninth and had to chip out, which resulted in a second drop, and Gerber made the turn at two-under-par.

Gerber recovered a dropped shot on 11 with a birdie on the 391 metre par-four 13th, and maintained his score when he carded birdies on the next three holes.

He contested strongly with Rowe, who played in the same match as Gerber, and the silver lining to a bogey on the 17th was that Rowe carded one-over for the hole as well.

Gerber was nervous as he approached the 18th green and his second shot found the bunker to the left of the green.

His chip out of the bunker to 20 feet past the pin, the result of Maccauvlei’s lightning quick greens, but Gerber remained calm and holed the long putt to take the win.
