Grace bounces back in WGC Match Play

Grace siteBranden Grace bounced back from an opening day defeat in the World Golf Championships – Dell Match Play by winning 4 & 3 against David Lingmerth on Thursday in Austin, Texas.

Grace birdied his first two holes to take a lead over the Swede that he would never relinquish. He maintained his 2 up lead through the front nine and won the first three holes of the back nine to extend his lead over Lingmerth to 5 up.

There has been much talk about the gusty conditions at Austin Country Club and the wind picked up again on Thursday during Grace’s match against Lingmerth. He said, “Dave is a tough competitor and is a great player in the wind. It was tough out there. I think no bogeys on the card was key. It was a different wind than we’ve had the whole week.”

Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel backed up their opening match wins with respective victories against Bernd Wiesberger and Charley Hoffman.

Schwartzel never trailed against Hoffman and the American went on to bogey four of his last five holes to give Schwartzel a relatively easy run in to his 3 & 2 victory.

Oosthuizen carded six birdies to continue his winning streak in the group stages and will face England’s Any Sullivan on Friday. A 13-foot putt on the 17th green saw him close out the match 2 & 1.

Unfortunately, Jaco Van Zyl lost his match to Brooks Koepka after the American took control of the back nine. Birdies at the 10th and 11th put Kopeka 4 up and he closed the match out with an 18-footer at the 14th to win 5 & 4.

Friday will see Branden Grace face Russell Knox, Jaco Van Zyl play Billy Horschel, and Charl Schwartzel play Brandt Snedeker.
