Jaco Ahlers proved just how valuable the big tournaments are when it comes to the Chase to the Investec Cup this week with his victory at the Lion of Africa Cape Town Open catapulting him to fifth in the points standings.
The 34-year-old has picked up some good points over the 14 events that he’s played on the Sunshine Tour this year, but at Royal Cape Golf Club he walked away with a chart-topping 250 to close down the gap between himself and Chase leader Danie van Tonder.
The Chase to the 2015 Investec Cup began at this year’s Telkom Business PGA Championship and incorporates every Sunshine Tour event until the week preceding the Investec Cup tournament next March.
Investec’s Merrick Bremner has built up a good points total and currently holds 13th in the Chase. His victory at the BMG Classic in October helped him vault into the upper levels and it will take one last push for him to secure a spot at the Investec Cup tournament in March 2015.
That push could well come at the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek, which is a co-sanctioned event that offers up a total of 10 000 points.
Flying under the radar is another Investec Brand Ambassador: Dean Burmester, who won the Sun City Challenge in July this year. The Bloemfontein local is currently 22nd in the Chase and has to continue performing well if he wants to remain within the bounds of the top 30 and secure his place at the finale.
The 25-year-old got married last week and hopefully that personal joy will flow over to the golf course as he, too, looks towards Leopard Creek for a good end to the season.
