Investec Cup update: Oliver within range

This week’s Alfred Dunhill Championship offers up huge points for the Chase to the Investec Cup and Oliver Bekker, who ranks 30th in the standings, is aiming to secure his position.

The three-time Sunshine Tour champion has played on stages as big as the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, but on home soil it doesn’t get much bigger than the Investec Cup.

The Chase to the 2015 Investec Cup began at this year’s Telkom Business PGA Championship and incorporates every Sunshine Tour event until the week preceding the Investec Cup tournament next March. Bigger events, such as those co-sanctioned with the European Tour, offer more points.

Bekker’s 31st birthday coincides with the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship and his high spirits will help when it comes to tackling the final event of 2014.

He’s been about at Leopard Creek before and in 2011 finished tied for 29th on five-under-par for the week, but it will take more than that to secure a berth at the Investec Cup.

He’s won a tournament each year for the past three years, but remains winless in 2014. This week he’ll need to produce real magic if he wants to trump countrymen Louis Oosthuizen and four-time Alfred Dunhill Champion Charl Schwartzel.

It’s a big ask for Bekker, but he’ll be game to contend and has every chance to make some serious points before the festive break.
