Jaco chases Di Data title, Order of Merit climb

As Jaco van Zyl tees off in the final round of the Dimension Data Pro-Am, he knows victory in the R3.75-million event at Fancourt Golf and Country Estate will vault him over Charl Schwarztel in the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit.

He shared the third-round lead with Hennie Otto, and a win would give him a cheque for R594,375 – enough to take his winnings for the year so far to R1,954,104, and within striking distance of Darren Fichardt, the man who beat him in last week’s Africa Open in East London.

The players have completed a round on each of the Outeniqua, Montagu and The Links at Fancourt, and the final round will be played over the Montagu course.

Van Zyl carded a two-under-par 70 in the third round on Montagu, so he will be going into his second consecutive day on the 6,714-metre layout.

“When I saw the draw, I thought that was great,” he said, “because with it being over three courses, you’ve got to get used to three differing course conditions. After I played at The Links in my second round, it was really hard to try and get the pace of the greens at Montagu. So coming out here in the final round, I’ll definitely have a good idea what to expect.

“It’s most probably one of the fairest golf courses,” he said. “If you play well, you’ll get a good result out of it and if you’re not playing so nicely, it’s definitely the sort of course that will bite you.”

And he will want to put his closing one-over-par finish in the Africa Open out of his mind as he hunts another Sunshine Tour title.
