Thirteen-time Sunshine Tour winner Jaco van Zyl is having knee surgery next month and is likely to miss most of the rest of the year on the Sunshine Tour after he plays in the Telkom Business PGA Championship.
“The kneecap on my right knee keeps popping out, and the tendons around it aren’t growing back,” said the 35-year-old Van Zyl, who will defend his PGA Championship title at Country Club Johannesburg from April 3 before going under the knife.
“It’s actually both knees that need work,” said Van Zyl, “and I’ll be in a wheelchair for two months after the operation. Then it’s rehabilitation work, and it will depend on how well that goes as to when I will be able to return to golf.
“I’m hoping that I can get back in time for the South African Open Championship, or maybe the Nelson Mandela Championship later in the year. Otherwise, it’s going to be in 2015,” he added.
Van Zyl, who is defending champion in this week’s Investec Cup, has been playing the tournament – and every tournament for the last three years – with a knee brace on his right knee. That hasn’t stopped him from putting himself in a good position to defend his title as the final round of the Investec Cup plays out over the Lost City at Sun City.
He carded a seven-under-par 65 in the third round to move to within three shots of the lead going into the final round.
