Javi’s rare bird makes Mauritius cut

DCIM100GOPROGOPR2677.Javi Colomo of Spain needed birdie on his last hole of round two in the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Ope, the ninth, in order to make the cut. He was way better than that: He made an albatross one on the 329-yard par-four – a hole-in-one on a par-four!

“I hit an unbelievable driver, very high with a little cut. I tried to stop the ball on the green and the ball found the hole. I needed a birdie to make the cut, double eagle is just fantastic,” he said.

Were you always going for the green?

I made three putt bogey on eight and I was two over and I needed birdie to make the cut. That’s why I hit driver as I needed a birdie.

There’s a villa and Jaguar on offer for the weekend (on 17 and 18)?

Now, I know what to do, maybe I will try for sure on those holes. I put the ball on the green one meter for eagle (on 17) during practice. It was almost the same drive. High driver, a little cut. I did a good job for 36 holes. I deserved to play the weekend. After the three putt on eight, I was very angry. I thought I could hit a good driver or make eagle or birdie.

Did Critina (wife and caddie) help decide on the club selection on nine?

Not on nine as I made three putt and I was disappointed. I didn’t look at her face and I decided the club for myself. I was very right this time. Normally it’s 50-50 (laughter).

Did you see the ball go in?
We couldn’t see. But we heard some guys shouting but we couldn’t believe that. We thought the ball was very close but when we were on the fairway, we couldn’t see the ball on the green. And then one guy told me that the ball was in the hole. It was a perfect shot.

Note: Colomo’s hole in one on a par four is the first ever record on the Asian Tour, Sunshine Tour. European Tour to confirm. It is also the 19th albatross in Asian Tour history.

Note: A US$1 million villa by Villa Valriche is on offer to the first golfer who shoots an eagle at the par four 17th hole during the final round while an all-new Jaguar XE R-Sport is on offer for the first Albatross on the par five 18th hole during the weekend rounds.
