Jacques Kruyswijk (@jakesgolf62) has to play in Thursday’s qualifier for the weekend’s Lombard Insurance Classic at the Royal Swazi Sun Country Club, but he will go into the chase for 15 spots in the main tournament with a lot of confidence.
That’s because he pulled off his one of his biggest paydays as a professional in last week’s Mopani Copper Mines Zambia Open with his share of 15th place after a superb opening 65, and because he reeled in one of his two top-10 finishes on the 2013 Sunshine Tour during last year’s Lombard Insurance Classic.
He carded rounds of 69-69-68 in last year’s tournament to finish in a share of seventh, seven strokes behind winner Merrick Bremner. The other top-10 came in the Platinum Classic, in which he finished in a share of fifth.
Kruyswijk turned professional in 2013, and campaigned with a great deal of success on the Sunshine Big Easy Tour, in which he finished inside the top 10 four times in addition to gaining his maiden win in the Els Club Copperleaf leg last August. And he finished seventh in the Bog Easy Tour Championship.
He finished 79th on last year’s Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, which meant he had to continue with his regular diet of the tough tournament pre-qualifiers.
But the Zambia result last week, and the return to the scene of one of his best professional performances will give him hope that he gets through the gruelling process of qualifying again and that he plays well enough in the tournament to lift him closer to his goal of being able to play in tournaments without having to qualify.
