Alexander Knappe of Germany fired a seven-under-par 66 on The Links at Fancourt on Friday morning to take a commanding clubhouse lead going into the afternoon of the Dimension Data Pro-Am being played on all three course at the resort.
Knappe, who bases himself in George for the German winter, says living here for a while prior to the tournament has helped him with conditions.
“I’ve been here for three months already,” he said. “It’s my winter base. I know the greens really well and that’s the reason I can putt really well here. I know all the grains and my caddie is really good so every line today was right so that was really good.”
Conditions on Thursday were extremely fair at Fancourt over the three layouts and Friday has been no different. Having played The Links during his time here, Knappe said it was the calmest conditions he had ever played in on the testing course.
He said, “Usually it’s so windy. I’ve never played The Links so calm. It was like an easy walk today. It helped to have played it in really bad conditions.”
With an 11-under total after two days, Knappe looks set to enjoy contending for the weekend and he says he is relishing the opportunity. Speaking about the possibility of contending on Sunday, he said, “I’m really happy and today was a great round. Of course, I’ll give it a shot and play as well as I can on the weekend.”
