After an impressive start to the year, Zander Lombard has his sights set on one thing – a first career win on the Sunshine Tour. For Lombard, a first win can be achieved this week at the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open at Royal Harare Golf Club.
Lombard played phenomenal golf early in January, backing up his tie 12th finish at the BMW South African Open Championship with a second place finish at the Joburg Open, and the young gun is hungry to get his first win under his belt.
His rookie season in 2015 saw him finish 50th on the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit but he wants more. “I’m looking forward to the next few tournaments in Africa,” he said. “I’m still chasing down that elusive win, it keeps avoiding me, but I’m definitely going to give it my best to win one of these events.”
This week will be Lombard’s first appearance at the event and after playing in the Tuesday pro-am, he is excited about what the week has in-store, as well as the condition of the course. “The course is looking amazing. The guys were speaking about the course beforehand and I really do appreciate what they were saying to me. The greens are top class,” he said.
The 156-man field tees off on Thursday in the 72-hole R1,8-million tournament, with Dean Burmester the defending champion.
With all the attributes needed to bag a win on tour, Lombard is surely on the cusp of achieving his goals. “If I can win, it’ll mean a great deal to me. It’ll just prove to myself that I’m able to win. You know I’ve been knocking on the door, so it’s just about being patient and sticking to my guns.”
