Louis Oosthuizen

Louis Oosthuizen cast a few glares his putter’s way during his Africa Open victory over the weekend, but it wasn’t all the Ping Redwood Anser’s fault.

His work off the tee also left a bit to be desired in the win which came on the first hole of a three-way playoff with England’s Chris Wood and Spaniard Manuel Quiros.

“It’s been one of those weeks when the putter was very cold,” Oosthuizen told reporters after landing his third European Tour triumph. “But my caddie [Zack Rasego] kept me so calm by telling me it would go in eventually.”

And it did, with a pressure 12-footer going in to shut out Wood and Quiros at the 18th at East London Golf Club.

There was also the small matter of the monstrous drive on 15, which left him with a little eight-iron into the green and the putter came through in the clutch for him yet again.

Here’s a look at the clubs he used in his first win since the 2010 Open Championship:

DRIVER: Ping Rapture V2 (9°) with a Project X 6B7 shaft
FAIRWAY WOODS: Nike SQ II (13°, 19°) with a Project X shafts
IRONS: Ping S56 (3-9) with True Temper Dynamic Gold X-100 shafts
WEDGES: Ping Tour S (47°, 54°, 60°) with True Temper Dynamic Gold X-100 shafts
PUTTER: Ping Redwood Anser
BALL: Titleist Pro V1x (07)

MARKER: Oosthuizen uses a commemorative coin with the date he and wife Nel-Mare got married

Zack also points out that Oosthuizen carries eyewear in his bag to match his clothing – and that can sometimes be an issue when he wore pink as he did in East London at the weekend!

A caddie’s insights are often good too: “Louis loves that five-wood (the 19° Nike SQ II),” he said. “He can hit it any distance, and he especially likes hitting it downhill.”

It came to his rescue on the ninth in the final round at East London: Initially, he tugged it left off the tee, but after he came out of the bush sideways, he blasted it downhill all the way to the small green where it just rolled over the back fringe. The result: A bogey that felt as good as a birdie after the trouble he was in.
