The inaugural Tshwane Open teed off at The Els Club, Copperleaf, on Thursday, with the Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane, Councillor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, hitting the ceremonial first tee shot.
The tournament, co-sanctioned by the European Tour and Sunshine Tour, has drawn a strong field including former European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal, 2011 Open champion Darren Clarke and 2005 US Open champion Michael Campbell.
ÂWeÂre very pleased, as a capital city, to be hosting a tournament of this magnitude, said Councillor Ramokgopa.
ÂWe want to project ourselves as a leading capital city on the African continent and we want to use this event to draw people to the city. We havenÂt exploited our tourism potential and we want golf tourists to experience the life and ambience of this city. This tournament is a great platform to propel our city forward.Â
Councillor Ramokgopa also confirmed the cityÂs vision to grow the tournament over the next few years.
ÂThe profile of the players we have for the inaugural tournament is great, and we hope to increase this profile. We are confident about the future of this event. We are committed for the next three years, and itÂs our intention to take it further.Â
