Mayor tees off Joburg Open

15_SUN_JOB_RD1EE_WEBThe 2015 Joburg Open teed off at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club on Thursday with the Executive Mayor of the City of Joburg, Councillor Mpho Parks Tau, hitting the ceremonial first tee shot.

With the Joburg Open trophy standing alongside the Open Championship’s Claret Jug, the Executive Mayor reiterated the city’s commitment to a tournament that has been secured for a further three years on the European and Sunshine Tour schedules.

“This event gives us an opportunity to position Johannesburg as a golf destination of choice. Johannesburg is the flagship city of Africa, and since it made its debut in 2007, the Joburg Open has fast risen in status to become one of the major tournaments on the international schedule of the European Tour.”

The news that the tournament has been secured until 2018 has been welcomed by the players.

“This is one of the more prestigious tournaments we have in South Africa with one of the biggest prize funds on the Sunshine Tour. I think it’s a unique event in a great city and one that is supported pretty well from a spectator point of view. It’s a tournament I always enjoy playing,” said Thomas Aiken.

The Joburg Open will be played from Thursday to Sunday.
