McGuigan gets good start in Euro Q-School

Doug McGuigan fired a first-round three-under-par 69 in the European Tour Q-School First Stage event at Ribagolfe in Lisbon, Portugal as Sunshine Tour players continued to seek spots on one of the world’s largest tours.

McGuigan trailed leader Tiago Rodrigues of Portugal as the amateur carded a superb eight-under-par 64 to lead by three from Spain’s Vicente Blazquez and four from Rafael de Sousa of Switzerland.

Oliver Bekker was one behind McGuigan after he signed for a two-under-par 70, while Bradford Vaughan finished one-over on 73.

In other First Stage action at Frilford Heath in England, Josh Cunliffe was at two-under-par 70 after the first round to trail leader Dale Whitnell of England by three shots.

Martin Lemesurier of England and Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg shared second on 68.

Sunshine Tour member Jeremy Kavanagh of England carded a level-par 72, with Ryan Tipping finishing two-over for his opening round on 74. Neil Cheetham was a further stroke off the pace on 75.
