McIntyre watching Investec Cup rankings closely

Sunshine Tour professional PH McIntyre will be keeping on anxious eye on the fields of the Arnold Palmer Invitational in the United States and the Maybank Malaysian Open over the next week.

McIntyre is currently 31st in the Chase to the Investec Cup standings on the Sunshine Tour, and the top 30 players get to share in the R5-million Bonus Pool and play in the R1-million Investec Cup tournament from March 21.

Ahead of McIntyre in the Chase to the Investec Cup are players like Charl Schwartzel and George Coetzee, who are likely to be playing at Bay Hill in the United States as part of their preparation for the Masters, and European Tour players like Scott Jamieson of Scotland, England’s Steve Webster, Swede Bjorn Akesson and Gregory Bourdy of France will probably choose to play in Malaysia.

The absence of those players will get McIntyre into a position to contend for a share of the big money on offer to players who have performed well throughout the Sunshine Tour’s ‘summer swing’.

The 2012/2013 Chase to the Investec Cup season consists of the tournaments starting with the BMG Classic last October and ending with the Telkom PGA Championship on March 17. The top 30 players on the Investec Bonus Pool ranking, after the Telkom PGA Championship will qualify for the season ending Investec Cup on March 21.

The Investec Bonus Pool offers total prize money of R5-million with R2-million going to the winner – 30th place will pick up R40,000. And the Investec Cup will carry a prize find of R1-million with R163,400 going to the winner.

The concluding tournament will take place with a round over each of the Rustenburg, Millvale and Lost City golf courses, and the final round will be played at the Lost City.

A fourth place in last year’s ISPS Handa SA Match Play Championship and a share of second in the Telkom PGA Pro-Am in Centurion in January have put McIntyre in a position to challenge for a top 30 spot in the Chase to the Investec Cup – and he’d prefer to play his way in than to have a route opened up for him by the withdrawal of others.
