Muthiya edges closer to Investec Cup spot

16_DD_MuthiyaM_rd2NEW_editWith just this week’s Dimension Data Pro-Am and next week’s Eye of Africa PGA Championship left in the Chase to the Investec Cup, Madalitso Muthiya was one of many golfers who made a move towards the top of those rankings.

He carded a four-under-par 69 on The Links at Fancourt on Friday to move into contention at 10-under-par at the halfway stage of the tournament, just three off the clubhouse lead set by France’s Julien Guerrier.

“I’d love to get into the top 16 for the Investec Cup,” said Muthiya. “That’s a main aim of mine. I think all the players try to get into that top 16 and have a chance to get the winner’s share of the R10-million Bonus Pool. I’m going in the right direction, so it’s so far so good in this tournament.”

The 2015/2016 ‘Chase to the Investec Cup’ season consisted of players earning points at Sunshine Tour tournaments, starting with the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open last April and ending with theEye of Africa PGA Championship next week. The top 16 players on the Chase to the Investec Cup Bonus Pool ranking after the PGA Championship will qualify for the season-ending Investec Cup at Millvale Private Retreat starting on March 9.

They will play for the Investec Bonus Pool which consists of R10-million, with R4-million going to the winner; thereafter, the balance will be shared accordingly between the remaining 15 players in the top 16.

Muthiya still has work to do, with his current position projecting him inside the top 30, so a good finish at Fancourt is critical ahead of next week’s tournament. “I’m quite pleased with the way I played,” he said. “It was quite steady, just like yesterday and I just had a couple of blemishes on 12 and 14 where I made bogey and par. But all in all, it was a good round today.

“I’m pleased with how I’m playing, putting good rounds together and not making too many mistakes. That was one of my aims this week. I’ve reflected on some of the rounds I had last year, and tried to rectify the things I needed to – like my chipping, and converting the putts I need to convert.”
