Pistorius stays sharp in the wind

BOKSBURG, July 5 – Albert Pistorius scored an opening round of 66 on Tuesday in cold and windy conditions at ERPM Golf Club in the Sunshine Big Easy Tour event presented by Stonehage.

Pistorius shot six-under-par for the lead on day one, despite the temperature being five degrees Celcius. “I play on feel, and with the cold today I just had to trust my swing,” he said.

A birdie on the opening hole and on the ninth and the Silver Lakes Country Club professional was two-under-par before making the turn.

Pistorius then went on to card five birdies on the back nine after his solid start, “I think when you’re in that frame of mind it’s easier,” he said.

Despite windy conditions Pistorius hit 15 greens in regulation and made just one bogey, which he carded on the 12th, a 169-metre par-three.

The 30-year-old Pistorius recorded his first win three weeks ago at Glendower Golf Club with a tournament score of 11-under-par and he took the winner’s share of the R100 000 event.

Attie Schwartzel carded a round of five-under-par 67 including four birdies on his front nine. He is currently one shot behind the lead before the second and final day at ERPM.

Dean Burmester has come second in the last two Sunshine Big Easy tour events, and with his opening round of four-under-par 68, he is tied for third going into the final day. Coenie Stoop also trails the lead by two shots. He, like Pistorius, also made his only bogey on the twelfth: “A very difficult pin placement on that hole,” Stoop said. Thabang Simon and Ockie Strydom also finished the day tied for third at four-under-par.
