Porteous still outside top 60 in Europe

Share on:

After his share of 37th in the Omega European Masters on the European Tour in Switzerland at the weekend, Haydn Porteous has dropped back by one position to 62nd on the Race to Dubai rankings.

The 2016 Joburg Open winner took his second European Tour title in the D & D REAL Czech Masters the previous week, and had climbed to just one spot outside the top 60 in the Race to Dubai. He needs to be inside the top 60 if he wants to go on to compete in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in November.

He carded rounds of 69-69-68-70 in Switzerland to share 37th with the likes of Adilson Da Silva and Dylan Frittelli. Darren Fichardt was the top South African in the tournament in a share of sixth, while Richardt Sterne was ninth and Dean Burmester 30th.

Porteous was pleased enough with his showing, saying on his Instgram account, “All in all not a bad week. Didn’t feel like I had my A game but sometimes we need to just get it around.”

He’s not playing in this week’s KLM Open, so he will need to find the points he needs to climb inside the top 60 when he resumes play on the European Tour the following week in the Portugal Masters. That tournament is followed by three lucrative events, the British Masters, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and the fourth Rolex Series tournament on the 2018 schedule, the Italian Open

Good finishes in those tournaments should ensure that Porteous gets inside the top 60 and is able to play the whole of the Final Series, which consists of the Turkish Airlines Challenge, the Nedbank Golf Challenge, and the DP World Tour Championship.

Charl Schwartzel is the leading South African on the rankings at 20th, with Branden Grace in 27th, Frittelli in 33rd, Burmester in 44th and Brandon Stone in 53rd all ahead of Porteous at this stage.
