Roos heads up Investec Cup race after Cape win

Jake Roos’ play-off victory in the inaugural R2-million Lion of Africa Cape Town Open at Royal Cape Golf Club at the weekend has given him the lead in the Sunshine Tour’s Chase to the Investec Cup.

His fifth Sunshine Tour title – in his fifth play-off – brought him 250 points in the race to get into the elite 30-man field for the season-ending Investec Cup after next March’s Telkom PGA Championship.

That boosted his tally to 413.48 points, well clear of South African Open Championship winner Henrik Stenson, who, last week, raked in the biggest possible points haul from a single tournament with his 330 for a win in a European Tour co-sanctioned event.

Roos, who has played in all six events in the Chase to the Investec Cup since it kicked off in October’s BMG Classic, will be looking for another good finish in next week’s Nelson Mandela Championship presented by ISPS Handa in Durban.

In addition to his victory in Cape Town, he had a share of fourth place in the Suncoast Classic, of 17th in the ISPS Handa SA Match Play and of 13th in the SA Open. He missed cuts in the BMG Classic and the Nedbank Affinity Cup.

Doug McGuigan is in third place, with Merrick Bremner and Darren Fichardt rounding out the top five.

Only Stenson is not in the field for the Nelson Mandela Championship, so good performances by any of the contenders could see them overtake the Swede in the standings next week.
