Rowe’s superb 65 takes Parys lead

Lyle Rowe completed a second-round seven-under-par 65 on Friday to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the R600,000 Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament at Parys Golf and Country Estate.

Play was suspended in the second round with just a few players still out on the course as a storm came in and made further play impossible.

Rowe was on the 18th tee at the suspension, but he returned to the course in the morning and birdied the 18th to head Attie Schwartzel by one.

Also completing their rounds were first-round leader Anthony Michael and Dean Burmester. Michael carded a level-par 72 to join Schwartzel in a share of second, and Burmester’s second-successive three-under 69 also vaulted him into a share of second.

Rowe’s superb 65 came with just a single dropped shot – he made bogey on the 17th after hitting his tee-shot into the trees along the banks of the Vaal River. He had made seven birdies up to that point, and he rectified his 17th-hole error with his closing birdie.

Looming a further two shots back was veteran Ulrich van den Berg, who signed for a 69 to go with his opening 71, and he began the third round just three off the pace as he went in search of his first victory since the Vodacom Origins of Golf event in Humewood, Port Elizabeth, in 2010.
