SA players in the Open: Adilson Da Silva

The Brazilian who calls South Africa home gained his place at Royal Lytham and St Annes through the IFQ Africa, and it will be his third attempt at the Open Championship.

He missed the cut at the 2000 event at St Andrews and in 207 at Carnoustie, but since then, he has picked up six of his nine Sunshine Tour wins, including two in 2010 and two in 2011.

He’s had a quiet 2012, both in South Africa and in Asia, where he has spent much of the last two years campaigning: He played 11 times last year and was ranked 50th on the Order of Merit, and after eight tournaments this year, he has missed four cuts and has a best finish of 16th.

But he does have the memory of an extraordinary course record-equalling eight-under-par 63 at Sun City’s Gary Player Country Club last year to draw on – proof that distance is not a pre-requisite for tough courses!
