SA players in the Open: George Coetzee

George Coetzee looked the part in his first start in a major championship, when he finished 15th last year behind popular champion Darren Clarke.

He was not as impressive when he played the US Open earlier this year, but then not many people were on an incredibly tough course as Webb Simpson ran out a surprise winner.

He has been knocking on the door on the European Tour for nearly two years now, and, with four top 10s this year and seven last year – including a runner-up spot in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles – he is clearly ripe for a step up to the top level of the podium.

He had a bit of a quiet showing in the Scottish Open last week, but a pair of 69s and a pair of 72s was good preparation – and perhaps winning the week before a major is not a good thing!
