SA players in the Open: Grant Veenstra

It’s been a funny old year for Grant Veenstra, and a good performance at the Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes could just put a neat cap on it.

He’s made just two cuts on the Sunshine Tour this year, but, when it came to the chance to play in the Open Championship, the little Cape Town pro turned it on: In the IFQ Africa at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington, he closed with a second-round 67, which included four consecutive birdies from the sixth to the ninth to top the leaderboard and play his way into the major.

His top finish in a big event was a share of 40th in the 2007 Alfred Dunhill Championship, so a good performance in the Open could cause a major change in the course of his career.

His best performance on the Sunshine Tour came in 2007, when he shared third in the Vodacom Origins at Fancourt – and he’ll be hoping for some of that magic.
