SA players in the Open: Jbe’ Kruger

There could scarcely be a sterner test for Jbe’ Kruger’s major championship debut than he will encounter in the Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

However, the diminutive leader of the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit – the result of his victory in the European Tour co-sanctioned Avantha Masters in India – is nothing if not dogged, and if he curbs his enthusiasm for the use of driver off the tee in the face of the bunkers littered around the course, he could get into contention.

Since his Indian victory – and his top 10 in the Joburg Open, it’s been a bit of a struggle for Kruger, however, with four missed cuts.

But a workmanlike share of 30th in the Irish Open and a solid 36th in last week’s Scottish Open seems to have got him back on track – and if he works on keeping his shots low, he could have a good time of it.
