SA players in the Open: Retief Goosen

Retief Goosen shared 13th the last time the Open Championship was played at Royal Lytham and St Annes, just a month after he won his first major at the US Open.

This year, he has the unpleasant memory of his withdrawal after the first round at Royal St Georges to erase, which snapped a string of 11 consecutive cuts made in the Open – a streak which included six top 10s.

It’s been a solid if unspectacular year for the Goose, but he finds himself in a respectable 20th place in the European Tour’s Race to Dubai, thanks in no small part due to his fine 10th place in the US Open – and three other top 10s, one of which was a playoff loss he and Ernie Els suffered at the hands of Branden Grace in the Volvo Champions.

His US Open performance is recent enough to suggest the Goosen ship is turning, and, given that it was on as monstrously difficult course, seems to indicate he’s in for a good Open.
