ItÂs been a long road back for Richard Sterne, and he might not be all the way back, but such is his talent, it would not be a surprise to see him perform well in the Open Championship this week.
After he rose to a career-high 29th in the world rankings on the strength of his superlative close to 2008  he won the Joburg Open, the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the South African Open Championship  he battled back problems for fully two years before he was able to gingerly return to the fairways.
And while he has not had dominating moments such as he had in 2008, he has made full use of his medical exemption on the European Tour.
After his sixth place in the Africa Open, he reeled off three consecutive top-10 finishes in the BMW PGA Championship, the ISPS Handa Wales Open and the Nordea Masters.
He has ridden that wave to a respectable 35th spot in the Race to Dubai, and if  and when  his game clicks, he will be a formidable opponent.
It could be at Royal Lytham and St Annes.
