SA players in the Open: Trevor Immelman

Trevor Immelman’s best finish in the Open Championship was a share of 15th in 2005, but there have been signs his game is coming around ahead of the tee-off tomorrow at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

It’s been a struggle for Immelman in the wake of his surgery and injury issues, and this year has shown flashes of his undoubted abilities: He has had three top-20 finishes on the US PGA Tour, with a best performance of a share of 12th in the Waste Management Phoenix Open back in February.

But seven missed cuts – including at the US Open and in his last event, the Greenbrier Classic – have been frustrating for the 2008 Masters champion.

However, there are not many better students of the game, and his appreciation of courses as difficult as Lytham could stimulate his creative juices enough to make him perform a lot better than his 2005 showing.
