Spacey enjoying hot Sishen
Matthew Spacey signed for a decent three-under-par 69 opening round of the Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament at Sishen Golf Club but admitted the hot weather in Kathu was a challenge to deal with on Thursday.
“It’s been quite a while since I played in heat like this,” he said after his round. “I needed a lot of water but it was fun. Very hot again.” Despite the heat in the Karoo town, Spacey felt he gave a good account of himself out there.
“Yeah, I played solidly. I hit the ball very nicely from tee to green. I missed quite a few putts but I will go do some work this afternoon and, hopefully, the putts drop tomorrow,” he said. And while he felt like he left a few out there in round one, the rookie who came through this season’s qualifying school, had nothing but praise for the course at Sishen.
“The greens are rolling very, very true,” said Spacey, “They are very firm. You kind of have to hit a club shorter but I’m enjoying the course, loving it.” He did seem to enjoy the course as he made a total of six birdies in the first round, only for his progress to be halted by the shots he dropped on 13, his fourth hole, 17 and another one coming home on the seventh hole which was his 16th.
With the weather forecast predicting temperatures of 33 degrees Celsius for Friday, Spacey will need to adjust and acclimatise quickly so that his game is not put off by the elements. “I’m looking forward to everything,” he said. “I love this golf course!”
And, with the heat seemingly relentless for the days ahead, Spacey and the rest of the players will need to be resilient in order to produce good results come week’s end in the Northern Cape.
