Sterne, Frittelli lead SA Scottish challenge
Dylan Frittelli and Richard Sterne were the leading South African players after the first round of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open as they finished round one in a share of 10th after signing for five-under-par 65 at Gullane Golf Club on Thursday.
American Luke List led the first round with a seven-under-par 63, a shot clear of a group of five players which included Rickie Fowler, the 2015 champion, and Lee Westwood.
Frittelli made five birdies on the second, third, sixth, 10th and 14th while Sterne also had a bogey-free round with five birdies on the second, seventh, 10th, 11th and 14th. They shared the spot with seven other players.
One shot behind Frittelli and Sterne was their countryman Justin Walters who made five birdies on the first, second, 13th, 14th and 17th. He made one bogey on sixth.
Trevor Immelman, the 2008 Masters champion, opened with two-under, as did Jacques Kruyswijk and Dean Burmester. Christiaan Bezuidenhout was on one-under with George Coetzee and Darren Fichardt. Ernie Els was on level-par with Brandon Stone.
Haydn Porteous was on one-over, Thomas Aiken two-over, Erik van Rooyen on three-over and Zander Lombard on four-over.
