Stone looking forward to week at Bridgstone
Brandon Stone is hoping to make his presence felt when he makes his debut at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Ohio on Thursday.
The three-time European Tour winner goes to Akron for the first time with his win at the Aberdeen Standard Investment Scottish Open 17 days ago still fresh on his mind. Stone is among eight debutants who boast 11 European Tour victories between them, with Alexander Björk, Paul Dunne, Li Haotong, Wade Ormsby, Shubhankar Sharma and Cameron Smith the others. Björk and Kodai Ichihara are also making their World Golf Championships debuts.
“It’s going to be a fantastic week,” Stone said during an interview with the European Tour ahead of the event in Ohio. “I’m very excited for the week. I think I watched it, even last year, as long as I can remember. The thing that really stuck with me was how well it’s manicured, how good it looked on TV and how quick the greens were.”
The South African is doing his homework on the course. “I’m having a little bit of a fun time on the putting green now, they’re nice and smooth and nice and quick,” he said “I’ve had a couple of chats with (Branden) Gracey and Louis (Oosthuizen) and Charl (Schwartzel) and seen their opinions of the course. I’m going to try and get out there with the boys and pick their brains on strategy.”
While he makes his debut at this prestigious event, Stone is heading to Ohio on the back of a big Rolex Series triumph in Scotland, and there’s hardly anything that could dampen his spirits now.
“Hopefully I’ll go out there, formulate a good game-plan and then put it in play Thursday to Sunday. To be here this week is obviously a fantastic achievement and one of the goals that I set out for myself at the start of the year,” Stone said.
Other South Africans in the field with Stone are Jaco Ahlers who qualified through the Dimension Data Pro-Am victory he claimed earlier in the year, Grace, Schwartzel, and Oosthuizen.
