In 1929 the members of Port Elizabeth Golf Club asked SV Hotchkin to design a new layout. Hotchkin was incredibly fond of St Andrew Links and that inspired him in his design of Humewood.
The golf course is on the edge of the coast, which creates strong winds where some golfers have trouble. The fairways are undulating and the greens are firm and fast. The bunkers are not deep and there are no water hazards on the course.
Humewood has hosted four Sunshine Tour events in the past, as well as the South African Amateur Stroke Play tournament.
The R600,000 Sun Boardwalk Challenge will play out at Humewood from the eighth to the 10th of October, with 132 professionals competing. The 54-hole event will have a cut to leading 40 players and those tied on the number after 36 holes.
