The oldest of the major championships, the Open is being played for the 140th time from July 14-17 at Royal St George’s, Sandwich, Kent.
It is played over the weekend of the third Friday in July on a rotational basis on nine links courses in Scotland and England. It was played at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, but that is no longer on the rotation.
The field size is 156, with players qualifying through a range of exemption categories (details in links below) and through International and Local Final Qualifying tournaments.
South Africans have won the tournament on nine occasions: Bobby Locke (1949, 1950, 1952, 1957), Gary Player (1959, 1968, 1974), Ernie Els (2002) and Louis Oosthuizen (2010). Nick Price of Zimbabwe, a Sunshine Tour member, won it in 1994.
