Theunis uses Currie Cup triumph for Match Play motivation

Theunis Spangenberg makes no secret of the fact that he is a fan of the Western Province rugby team, so that team’s Currie Cup victory is inspiring him during the ISPS Handa South African Match Play Championship.

He played his way into the quarter-finals on Friday with a 2-up victory over Keenan Davidse, and immediately thought of the 11-year-drought his rugby team endured before winning the Currie Cup once again.

“I’ve been thinking about how I won the South African Junior Match Play 11 years ago too,” said Spangeberg, “and it was just down the road here at Wingate Park.

“I feel fairly confident with match play. I think it’s a game that you can go really positive and don’t hold back,” he added.

Spangenberg, ranked 52nd for the R2-million tournament at Zwartkop Country Club, will be up against the 21st-ranked Merrick Bremner in the quarter-final, and Bremner will hit the ball a whole lot further than the opponents Spangenberg has faced thus far.

“Most of the guys on the tour are longer than me,” he laughed, “so I’m used to that. But it’s going to be great fun. Merrick’s game is on. He was playing behind me today so I saw a couple of his shots – and he’s always good.

“I’m up for the challenge every day,” he added.
