Thomas wins match play opener

15_EUR_MAT_RD1_WEBThomas Aiken produced a clinical 3&2 victory over Scott Jamieson in the first round of the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play on Thursday.

The South African went 1-up with a birdie on the first hole and raced away from there, gaining further ground with birdies at the fourth and fifth.

Scotland’s Jamieson, who won the 2013 Nelson Mandela Championship, won back two holes with birdies at the seventh and ninth, but failed to overcome the deficit he faced.

Aiken was not bothered by his opponent’s surge around the turn and continued to fire on all cylinders. The three-time European Tour champ kept his opponent in check with birdies at the 12th and 13th, going 4-up with five holes to play.

Jamieson was able to win back a hole when he birdied the 15th, but it was not enough.

When both players made par at the 16th it was all over, with Aiken progressing after a comfortable 3&2 victory.

Countryman Jbe’ Kruger could do little to prevent Chris Wood from dominating their match at Murcar Links Golf Club, where the Englishman birdied the 10th, 12th, 13th, and 14th for a confident 5&4 victory.

Darren Fichardt also failed to rein in his opponent Tyrrell Hatton, who closed out a 4&3 victory by making four birdies over six holes on the back stretch.

Trevor Fisher Jnr was the last of the South Africans to face off on Thursday, playing his match against Thorbjorn Olesen. Although the Dane made the first move when he won the fourth hole, it was one-way traffic in the opposite direction from there.

Fisher brought the match back to all-square with a par at the sixth and then moved 1-up when he birdied the 10th. The two players went pound for pound down the stretch, until the South African produced a final birdie at the 18th to win 2-up.
