Tjaart van der Walt returns to local shores to contest the Suncoast Classic at Durban Country Club this week, and his recent success on the Asian Tour should prove valuable.
Van der Walt will compete the R500,000 tournament after finishing tied for second at the ISPS Handa Singapore Classic with, among others, Suncoast Classic defending champion Adilson da Silva.
Da Silva will not defend his title, and instead remains in Asia to play the KJ Choi Invitational, leaving an opportunity for van der Walt, who includes a tie for seventh at the Joburg Open to his three top-10 finishes on the Sunshine Tour this year.
During June, van der Walt finished tied 10th at the QueenÂs Cup in Thailand and tied eighth at the Selangor Masters and enjoyed the rewards of consistent good form.
He returned to South Africa for the Vodacom Origins of Golf Simola event and finished at six-under-par to take a share of eighth, but was nine shots off the pace of fellow Asian Tour member Peter Karmis and winner Jean Hugo, who won in a playoff.
In August, van der Walt finished tied third at the Vodacom Origins of Golf Wild Coast event with his tournament score of three-under-par, two strokes clear of da Silva.
Van der Walt did not compete in the 2010 Suncoast Classic, yet finished fourth at the Telkom PGA Championship and tied for sixth at the Vodacom Championship during 2010.
Van der Walt has clocked up 30 top-10 finishes on the Sunshine Tour during his career, but is yet to take a win and will be after top honours following his success in Asia.
