The South African earned a place on the world’s most lucrative tour through the 2013 Web.com Tour, which offers up 25 spots each year.
In his rookie PGA Tour season Van Aswegen has missed nine cuts in 24 starts with a top result of tied 16th at the HP Byron Nelson Championship in May. He’s taken four top-25s and a handful of money finishes, but the focus for this week is FedExCup points.
The Wyndham Championship presents the last chance for players like Van Aswegen to move within the bounds of the top 125, which he is less than 50 points away from. The now-or-never feel of this week might inspire the 32-year-old to produce his best result of the season and join the top 125.
The bonus for making it to the playoffs is that he’ll keep a full tour card for the coming season, which would clarify his rookie year as a success. Plenty stands in his way, including the other bubble players that want to make the season finale.
For Van Aswegen it’s a make or break week and his whole season comes down to this tournament.
