Ulrich van den Berg is poised to challenge for the lead in the Sunshine Tour’s Chase to the Investec Cup for 2015, but he will have to wait a while before launching his bid to overtake Danie van Tonder.
Neither player will be taking part in this week’s Vodacom Origins of Golf presented by Samsung event at Vaal de Grace in Parys, as they will be playing in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the European Tour – together with a healthy contingent of 23 other Sunshine Tour players.
Van den Berg finds himself on 981.15 points in the Chase to the Investec Cup, just over nine adrift of Van Tonder’s 990.94 in the year-long battle to finish inside the top 30 and make it into the season-ending tournament which sorts of the distribution of a massive R10-million bonus pool. Trevor Fisher Jnr won the 2014 edition and took home a cool R3.6-million for his efforts.
The Chase to the 2015 Investec Cup began at this year’s Telkom Business PGA Championship and incorporates every Sunshine Tour event until the week preceding the Investec Cup tournament next March. Bigger events, such as those co-sanctioned with the European Tour, offer more points.
Van den Berg finished 17th in the 2014 Chase to the Investec Cup after his final round 69 in the tournament saw him finish in a share of 13th behind Fisher. He was 13th in the inaugural Chase to the Investec Cup with a share of eighth in that tournament, so he will be looking for bigger – and more lucrative – things in the 2015 tournament.
The absence of so many Sunshine Tour ‘winter’ regulars from this week’s tournament means that players like Jean Hugo and Titch Moore will want to take their chances to close the gap on Van den Berg and Van Tonder at the top of the table.
