Volvo Champions

The Volvo Golf Champions took place in the Kingdom of Bahrain in January 2011 and made an immediate impact, billed as a ‘Celebration of Golf,’ with a view to moving quickly to become the European Tour’s season-opening Tournament of Champions.

The form-book was to be proved correct when the then world number-nine Paul Casey, the highest-ranked player in the field took the title, and the €283,330 first prize that went with it, his 12th European Tour victory elevating the Englishman to sixth on the Official World Golf Rankings.

Commenting on the selection of The Links at Fancourt for the second playing of the tournament, Per Ericsson, President, Volvo Event Management said, “Quality, both of the challenge the golf course will pose to the field of proven champions and of the infrastructure, was a key consideration and The Links at Fancourt is right up there with the very best in the world.

“We also wanted a location that was suitable for the staging of the world final of the Volvo World Golf Challenge which will be staged simultaneously, with the successful formula of ‘Playing with the Pros’. Volvo’s customers and prospects can enjoy the sporting experience of a lifetime by playing alongside the stars of the European Tour for one day, live on worldwide TV,” continued Ericsson.

He added: “South Africa is an increasingly important market for Volvo and we believe everyone will enjoy all that South Africa and its world-renowned Garden Route will provide in January.”

The Championship will be contested over 72 holes, with all participants playing four rounds (there will not be a cut after 36 holes). Total prize money is €2-million.

On Friday the Volvo World Golf Challenge ‘World Finalists’ will play in the tournament, with one amateur playing with two professionals in each group. The professionals will continue to play individual strokeplay format, while the amateurs will play in a team competition with both professionals in their group forming their team. The best two scores of the three team members on each hole will count towards the team total.
