Charl Schwartzel is one of five nominees for the 2011 SA Sportsman of the Year award, and South African golf fans can vote for him to make sure he wins.
He joins football’s star striker Noko Matlou, world-record breaking swimmer Cameron van den Berg, rugby sevens try-scorer extraordinaire Cecil Africa and the world’s best one-day batsman Hashim Amla as a nominee for the award to be made on Sunday evening at a glittering function at Sun City in the North West Province.
Schwartzel grabbed the imagination of South Africa’s sports fans when he won the first major of the year back in April, winning the Masters at Augusta National in Georgia in the United States.
He closed with a record four consecutive birdies to beat off the early charge by Tiger Woods and to hold out Australians Adam Scott and Jason Day.
He has been by far the most successful of all the world’s golfers this year, carding a total of 14-under-par for the four majors, 10 strokes better than anyone else who made all four cuts.
You can vote for Schwartzel by sending an SMS saying “Sports”, followed by A to 34760 (SMS costs R1.50).
