After three rounds at the Final Stage of European Tour Qualifying School it looked like Justin Walters was done for, but then he did something magical. The 2014 Challenge Tour Graduate of the Year was not going gentle into that good night and shot a Tuesday 62 at PGA Catalunya to secure his progression into the final two rounds.
It was a scintillating display from the Johannesburger as he went eight deep on the par 70 track, despite including a bogey and a double in his score.
A 30-stroke back nine was indicative of the two-time Sunshine Tour winner’s ability to grit his teeth. He performed when it really counted and has 36 holes standing between himself and full playing privileges to the 2015 European Tour.
He’s scheduled to return to South Africa for next week’s Lion of Africa Cape Town Open and after that it’s into the co-sanctioned events that close out the year. It would be a big sendoff to the year if he came away from European QSchool with a card and his Tuesday 62 was a sign that he could very well do it.
