Winners know what it takes

The Vodacom Origins of Golf final at Legend Golf and Safari Resort will be hotly contested, and 2011 winners Jean Hugo, Chris Swanepoel and Darren Fichardt join the field on Wednesday.

Also present at the R600,000 event will be a trio of runners-up, namely David Hewan, Christiaan Basson and George Coetzee, promising that an exciting showdown is on the cards.

The first event of the season was hosted by Pretoria Country Club, and Hugo shot 66 on day two for a one-stroke lead over Coetzee going into the final round.

Hugo carded 67 on the final day and won by two strokes, while Coetzee struggled to catch up and carded a closing 72.

A fortnight later Swanepoel would shoot the lights out in his second round at a windy Arabellla Country Club.

He carded 65 on day two and maintained his lead with a closing 68, taking a three-stroke victory ahead of runner-up Basson.

At the end of July, Simola Golf Estate would host the third event of the season. After a stint in Asia, Peter Karmis announced his return by holding a six-stroke lead ahead of the final round.

But Hugo would again record a victory after he raced through his final round in 64, forcing a playoff, which he eventually won, leaving a shocked Karmis in second place.

The number 64 must have stuck in Fichardt’s mind when the series played its following event at Wild Coast Sun Country Club, because it was his closing score and secured him the win.

David Hewan put in a solid effort with his final round of 66, finishing one stroke shy of Fichardt in the fourth Vodacom Origins of Golf event for 2011.

The tour would find its way to Sishen Golf Club in Kathu just three weeks later, where Brazilian Adilson da Silva held on for a two-stroke victory over Rookie of the Year leader Allan Versfeld.

Neither of the two will be able to make the final due to overseas commitments.

Hugo is capable of Tiger-esque finishes and has twice shown the nerve to win, but he faces many hungry challengers come Wednesday.
