Frittelli happy with opening round in Mauritius

Dylan Frittelli was happy to start his AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open title-defence with an opening 3-under-par 69, despite admitting to making some mistakes at Four Seasons Golf Club Mauritius at Anahita, on Thursday.

“It was pretty good,” he said. “Decent round, I would have taken it at the start of the round. I had a lot of good golf out there. I made quite a few mistakes. I had a three-putt and I didn’t play par-fives very well, but I am not too far from the lead. So, all in all, pretty happy.”

Earlier in the week, Frittelli talked about how he missed the cut here some two seasons ago, a fate he was not going to allow for this time at this Ernie Els-designed course.

“I kept it in play,” he said of his opening round. “I only missed two fairways and the fairways I did miss, it was by a yard or two. So, it was very stress-free. A little stressful on the putting green. I mean when you get side pins and it’s three-four off the greens it’s really tough to tell yourself to go for the flag because it is short-sided on that side, but most of the greens are generous enough to hit it close to the flag. But I am very happy.”

The 28-year-old will be aiming for a similar, if not better, showing in the second round at Anahita to kick-start his European season on a similar note to last year’s.
