Kruyswijk in search of second title at Royal Cape

The last man to win the RAM Cape Town Open at Royal Cape Golf Club, Jacques Kruyswijk, says he has fresh memories of his victory here and hopes to put that experience to good use when he tees off in Cape Town this week.

“There are good memories here,” he said.  “Definitely, it is good to be back after a three-week stretch in the Middle East. Obviously, Cape Town brings back so many good memories. It is a good course and good greens this week. It has been grainy the last couple of weeks and this week it is green which is fantastic. The course looks in good nick. I am excited for the week.”

Kruyswijk reckons that he will have to master the windy conditions if he wants to pull another win out of the bag this week at the oldest club in South Africa. “It is going to be quite tricky this time around,” he admits. “I think it is a lot windier than the previous time I was here, but just managing yourself quite well around the course and hitting a lot of fairways and making some putts will help.

“I still think that the course needs a bit of patience as I said last time here. I think with any tournament and course you play you need to stay patient. I played well two years ago and hopefully, I can do it again this year. This is one of those tough courses that you need to keep it in play and if you not keeping it in play, just keep patient and make the best of it.”

The 26-year-old player will surely need patience as he comes from two missed cuts on the Sunshine Tour at the South African Open and the Alfred Dunhill Championship in December and, thereafter he went on to miss the cuts at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, Omega Dubai Desert Classic and the Saudi International powered by SBIA.

“To be honest the last while has been difficult for me,” he said. “I had a tough time off the golf course in my personal life, but my game feels good. This is golf, you know, and on any given week you can have a great week and you can win an event. So, you never know. Just go and set your guns and keep working hard and see what happens next.”
